U.S. President Donald Trump has terminated FBI Director James Comey’s employment.
President Trump, writing to Comey, said that he “could not effectively lead” the FBI, and a change in leadership was “necessary to restore trust.”
Trump also said the dismissal would “mark a new beginning” in the FBI’s history.
Comey was widely criticized for his handling of the Clinton e-mail server investigation. In a letter to Congress a week before the elections, Comey said that the FBI was to reopen the investigation, which many feel was partly to blame for Clinton’s loss.
