G7 to call for establishment of U.N. “cultural peacekeeping force” at the request of Italy

The G7 will, at the request of member state Italy, call for the establishment of a cultural protection force, which would be added to the current U.N. peacekeeping force.

The move comes as major historical sites and relics, including the ancient cities of Timbuktu and Palmyra, have been plundered, looted, and destroyed by militant groups. ISIL in particular has drawn attention for its destruction of ancient Assyrian ruins, including the demolition of the entire city of Nimrud.

The force, if approved by the Security Council, would likely bring in experts, such as restorers, to aid peacekeeping forces in proving and protecting pieces of art and relics, although the specific details of how such a force have yet to be announced.
