Vice-President of Colombia German Vargas Lleras has resigned, sparking speculation of a possible presidential bid in next year’s elections.
President Juan Manuel Santos nominated an ex-police chief as a replacement for Vargas. Oscar Naranjo was one of the negotiators of the FARC deal, which put an end to Colombia’s war with guerrilla fighters and won Santos a Nobel Peace Prize.
There have also been rumours that Santos, who was injured in a car bomb believed to be organized by FARC, was against the terms of the deal. He stated in his resignation letter that he has not yet decided whether or not to contest the upcoming elections.
