Queen Elizabeth marks Sapphire Jubilee

Queen Elizabeth marked on Monday the 65th anniversary of her rise to the throne, becoming the first British monarch to celebrate the so-called Sapphire Jubilee. Already the longest-reigning British monarch ever and the longest-reigning monarch alive in the world, the Queen did not attend any events to mark the date.

With Ascendance Day being the anniversary of her father’s death, Elizabeth has avoided in the past celebrating such milestones, as she did after surpassing Queen Victoria to become-longest reigning monarch.

The 90-year old queen instead spent the day in her secondary home at Sandringham, according to Buckingham Palace.
