Morocco readmitted as member of African Union

The North African Kingdom of Morocco has been readmitted into the continental organization following a three-decade long dispute over the status of the Western Sahara. Although Morocco claims sovereignty over the territory, the African Union’s predecessor in 1976 recognized it as an independent nation, leading Morocco to withdraw its membership.

King Mohammed of Morocco had recently fought for readmission into the organization, with the union now consisting of all 55 independent African states now members.
