Benoit Hamon to be Socialist Party’s candidate for upcoming election

In the second round of voting on Sunday night, Benoit Hamon was officially elected as the French Socialist party’s candidate for the presidential election in May.

Winning over more moderate candidate and former Prime Minister Manuel Valls, Hamon called on the left to unite against an almost assured victory for either far-right leader Marine Le Pen or more moderate conservative Francois Fillon.

There is also a risk that Valls, who resigned the post of Prime Minister to seek the nomination, will throw his support behind independent centrist candidate Emmanuelle Macron, who is closer to Valls’ own moderate political positions.

Regardless, a victory for Hamon seems near impossible with only months left until the election, with President Francois Hollande’s overwhelming unpopularity dragging down the party’s hopes for success.
