Benoit Hamon, Manuel Valls to compete in second round of primaries

Former Education Minister Benoit Hamon and Former Prime Minister Manuel Valls will head to the run-off vote of the French Socialist Party primary after a contentious first round vote.

Hamon, who was fired from Vall’s government, placed first in the vote, receiving 36%, while Valls came in second with 31%.

The two will face each other on January 29th. The winner will contend in the presidential election later on this year, although no Socialist candidate is expected to reach the second round of that vote due to incumbent president François Hollande’s deep unpopularity.
