Today in World History: March 16th

Although on this day in 1521 the planet was first circumnavigated, it was not, despite common belief, Ferdinand Magellan who achieved this feat. In fact, it was some of his crew members, originally from the Philippines, who hold the right to this title. Originally from the Spanish controlled island, they were sold to Magellan to serve as his crew members, and on this day, they returned to their native land as the ships on Magellan’s expedition made landfall. Despite his efforts, and their crossing of treacherous waters, including the Patagonian region of South America, Magellan died during the voyage, not circumnavigating the globe but earning a title as one of the best sailors and explorers the world has ever seen.
