On this day in 1888, in Washington D.C., the National Geographic Society was founded. Founded to study and protect many cultures, animals, and plants, and science, it is one of the world’s largest non-profit organizations. Founded in part by the man who invented the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, it is also the publisher of the famous magazine National Geographic. They support many other organizations and fund research projects. They are known for their iconic yellow border and stunning photos on the cover of each magazine. They also have a T.V. channel that looks at nature and the social status of the world.
