Today in World History: January 25th

On this day in 1924, the first Winter Olympic Games started. Held in the French Alps, the Winter Olympic Games followed the success of the recently reestablished Olympic Games. They differ from their counterpart bu offering sports on snow and ice such as hockey, bobsledding, and skiing. At the time of its inception, only five sports were competed in. At the last Winter Olympics in Sochi, fifteen sport events were held. No country in the Southern Hemisphere has ever applied to be a host city, due to the difference in the seasons. The Winter Olympics are to be hosted in Pyeongchang, in South Korea in 2018.
