Elisa Bonaparte, Napoleon Bonaparte’s sister, was born on this day in 1777. She became Princess of Lucca and Piombino, and eventually Grand Duchess of Tuscany. She was the only one of Napoleon’s three sisters to have political power. She was a patron of the arts, and often got into trouble for her wit and ideals. She had the dream of uniting Italy under the Bonaparte family. She married the French soldier Felice Pasquale Baciocchi. She died in 1820 of an illness at the age of 43. She had four children.
