Today in World History: January 7th

Sir Sanford Fleming was a Scottish-Canadian railway engineer who was born on this day in 1827. After working on the railroad, he developed his idea to standardize world time with the creation of Universal Standard Time. Using the important port town of Greenwich, England as his Prime Meridian, Fleming and several others helped to implement it across the globe. Universal Standard Time is still in use today, by using separate time zones, although each country can define its own zones.
