Today in World History: January 6th

Maria Montessori, an Italian woman who lived in the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century, opened her first school and day care on this day in 1906. Catering to working families, her schools eventually led to the creation of her method of teaching to inspire schools to bear her name, which are now popular throughout Europe and the Americas as Montessori schools. She died in the Netherlands in 1952 at the age of 81.

“Free the child’s potential, and you will transform him into the world.”

-Maria Montessori
