Today in World History: January 2nd

The Reconquista, a series of wars led by the kingdom of Castile, ended on this day with the surrender of Granada. The Reconquista was a mission undertaken by the Castilian kings and queens who wanted complete Catholic rule over the Iberian Peninsula. King Ferdinand, king of Aragon, married the Castilian queen Isabella, and their united kingdom was called Spain. Because of the end of the Reconquista, the King and Queen were in a good enough mood and had enough money to spare to give Christopher Columbus enough money to fund the expedition. He discovered the Americas later that same year.
