Today in World History: December 13th

Emily Carr, one of Canada’s most famous and successful artists, and one of the Group of Seven, was born on this day in 1871. Also a prolific author, Emily died in 1945 after setting an unbelievable precedent for the many female artists who followed in her footsteps. The Emily Carr University of Art in Victoria, the capital of British Columbia and her hometown, was built in her honor. She died of a heart attack at the age of 73, leaving behind a glorious legacy of creativity and ingenuity.

“I think that one’s art is a growth inside one. I do not think one can explain growth. It is silent and subtle. One does not keep digging up a plant to see how it grows.”

-Emily Carr
