Today in World History: December 10th

The Spanish-American War, which resulted in an American victory on this day in 1898, was sealed with the Treaty of Paris. In it, the Spanish Empire ceded the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Spanish West Indies to the U.S.. The Spanish also gave Cuba its independence.  The war marked the end of the Spanish Empire’s overseas empire, and eventually led it to fall under the influence of the other great powers in the world.
