Today in World History: December 9th

Gustavus Adolfus of Sweden, hailed as perhaps the best of its kings, was born on this day in 1594. Gustavus led the country into the Thirty Year’s War, which helped decide the religious, geographic, and political future of Europe. A Protestant, he fought with France, England, Denmark-Norway, and other Protestant Countries against the Catholic states of Europe, which included Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, Hungary, and Denmark-Norway from 1643 onward. Although he died in 1632 in battle, Gustavus Adolfus is still recognized as the founder of the powerful Swedish Empire.
