Today in World History: December 5th

The Great Smog, a large cloud of smog that descended on the British city of London in 1952, happened from December 5-9. An unfortunate coincidence of weather conditions led to a smog cloud that remained in the city for four days, killing more than 12,000 people immediately. Thousands of deaths were also later contributed to the immense air pollution that blanketed the city.
