San Juan Bautista, or the island of Puerto Rico, was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. Although he sighted the island from his ship the day before, the island was claimed for Spain on the 19th of November. Originally called San Juan Bautista, with its capital Puerto Rico, it was eventually renamed for the city. The island was eventually ceded to the United States of America from Spain in 1898. Puerto Rico is still a U.S. territory today.
