Today in World History: November 18th

Steamboat Willie, Mickie Mouse’s debut film and Walt Disney’s first animation success. Although it is only seven minutes long and was originally shown in black and white, it was hugely popular, kick-starting Walt Disney’s career and the rise of Mickey Mouse. November 18th is now considered by Disney as Mickey Mouse’s birthday. Minnie Mouse, Mickie’s girlfriend, also appeared for the first time in this short film. The cartoon is also recognized as the first cartoon with synchronized sound, which means that it is the first cartoon to have sound and picture moving together.

“I love Mickey Mouse more than any woman I have ever known.”

-Walt Disney
