Today in World History: November 16th

UNESCO, the United Nations Educational Scientifical and Cultural Organization was founded on this day in 1945. Their mission is to advance the study and education of and about important cultural events, places, people, beliefs, and rituals. They are part of the United Nations, and are heavily involved in the protection of important historical artifacts and ruins. UNESCO World Heritage Sites are places that are deemed by the organization to be important in the development of human history and therefore must be protected. They are usually buildings, ruins, statues, or museums, but in Quebec City’s case, it can be an entire city.

“Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed.”
